- 3.0 out of 5 stars from BuyLotsOfStuff -- Entertaining Whimsy : I read The House In The Cerulean Sea last year like a starving person eating a meal for the first time in a week, so I had very high expectations for this book. In my opinion, it did not live up to its predecessor. The writing was good, but it did not have as much humor or heart and dragged a bit as a result. I highly recommend The House In The Cerulean Sea instead; I read about 300 books a year and it was one of the best of 2020 for me. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 29, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from ShannonVM -- Such a poignant story, I loved it so much! : Oh, are my eyes going to be puffy tomorrow, the tears! I don't even know how to put into words what I'm feeling right now. I loved it. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 21, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Dotdala_reads -- There is beauty in life and in death : “We aren’t supposed to force someone before they’re ready. That’s not our job. We’re here to make sure they see that life isn’t always about living. There are many parts to it, and that it continues on, even after death. Its beautiful, even when it hurts” ( Reviewed in the United States on September 21, 2021 )
- 2.0 out of 5 stars from kitty kat -- Not good. : Repetitive, too long, dull, didn't care about the characters and overly sweet. It dragged. I wanted to like it but couldn't. Very expensive as well. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 23, 2021 )

Mei takes him to meet Hugo, the Ferryman, to continue his journey. Turns out, the door to the otherwise is located inside Hugo's tea shop. Wallace is not happy about this situation and not ready to continue onwards so spends some time at the tea shop until he is. This starts a real of chain of events for Wallace in terms of realising what is important in life and what is important in death. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 31, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from katie -- Beautiful : I don’t even know where to start with this. This book is about the journey of a small group of people, some alive and some dead. Chayron Crossing tea room is a way station for the dead who aren’t ready yet to cross over which is where owner Hugo (the ferryman) along with reaper Mei come in to help these lost souls. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Amanda Hudson -- Wow, wow, wow - what a read! : "What will you do with the time you have left?" ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 12, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Greg Dunn -- One of the best books I've ever read : And I don't make that claim lightly. T.J. Klune has always enthralled me for his captivating writing, for its honesty, its insight and its beauty, for its affirmation and inclusion, for challenging you as a reader and as a person. This is his best yet: a gorgeous story about love, redemption, acceptance and what it means to be alive. It will both warm and break your heart, and I defy anyone to read its last 70 pages through anything other than a veil of tears. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 13, 2022 )
- 3.0 out of 5 stars from Heide Thompson -- Very moving. : Enjoyed the book. But was a little dissapointed in the last chapter. Not the epilog- that had me in tears. But most of the book felt like it had a meaning, one that could be used in life, a new way to think about death, then that last chapter that decision by the manager- took me away from the story. It took days to be able to finish the book. It took away the realness of what could actually be out there. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 6, 2022 )

Under the Whispering Door is a kind book, full of faith in the goodness of people, full of kind people showing how compassion is a strength. It broke my heart with its unflinching understanding that grief never goes away, never empties, only settles into the room of your soul like a strange souvenir. From TJ Klune, New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of The House in the Cerulean Sea, comes Under the Whispering Door, a new contemporary fantasy about a ghost who refuses to cross over and the ferryman he falls in love with. When a reaper comes to collect Wallace Price from his own funeral, Wallace suspects he really might be dead. Under the Whispering Door seems to have everything going for it, with an intriguing premise, quirky characters, and T.J. Klune's trademark humor. But in the end, it never quite materialized into the profound story it should've been. Uptight corporate soldier Wallace Price thinks he has it all: money, career, and success.
