- 2.0 out of 5 stars from Natalia -- can't believe I read the whole book for the sake of a couple of intriguing scenes : I don’t mind that The Dark Rise basically uses the same premise you have certainly seen before - a youthful hero with a secret (Will), a girl with monster blood yet inherently good-natured (Violet), a villain bent on resurrecting an even bigger evil (Simon), a group of noble knights (Stewards), so far so good. - 2.0 out of 5 stars from CJC -- No. : This was simply… not good. The slog you have to get through to have a sliver of excitement in the last few pages is absolutely not worth the effort. Read a summary and call it a day. I honestly feel like an entirely different person wrote this than the person who wrote ‘The Captive Prince.’ There’s no compassions. This book is tired and riddled with cliques and just feels lazy. It reads like the book you write before you get a book published. No one was memorable or interesting and I’ve never had such high hopes dashed so thoroughly when it came to a book. Dammit. I really wish this had been good. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from C. Longley -- Absolutely in for the long haul! : Fans of Pacat's Captive Prince trilogy will jump on this but don't expect more of the same. This is a more tempered work, more consistent with the masterful set ups and story telling she achieved by the final in that series. Dark Rise is just the beginning of what is sure to prove a very compelling journey. Pacat plays with all the tropes of the classic fantasy genre: a world on the brink of disaster, a boy with a destiny he has yet to understand, a fellowship of individuals, each with their own inner tensions to unravel, but then she introduces slights of hand that undercut your assumptions and take the story in unexpected directions. The sexual ambiguity is still there and hints of a slow burn romance that is sure to build to a breathtaking climax but you've got to be in it for the long haul to be guaranteed that pay off. In the meantime, Dark Rise 1 has plenty to keep you glued to your seat. Brilliant world building, heart in your mouth action scenes and a host of supporting characters whose stories never feel like side bars. Yes, the central protagonist Will may appear a little "unformed" but there's a reason for that and the gradual revelation of his character and motivation works to steadily build his allure (for this reader at least). Pay attention! Like a great crime novel, Dark Rise looks to be scattered with apparently inconsequential details (and magical artefacts) that are bound to be of major importance later. It is very suspenseful, a bit bloody and sad at times for my liking, but of course it is a story about a ruthless Dark King and not a light comedy, so that' s necessary. - 2.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- Manage your expectations, this is not the Captive Prince. : I was a big fan of Fence and Captive Prince, but this novel is not in the same league. DARK RISE's world building is a good attempt but the return of the dark lord troupe is a beaten path. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Deanna -- CS Pacat is the master of tension : So good! This book is one where you have to read the entire thing to get perspective on the type of story it is. The first book is about setting up the world for us, and I'm so excited for the next books! All the parts with Will and James are so insanely good; CS Pacat is a master of slow burn tension, and the dynamics of this pairing are so interesting and, as mentioned above, so insanely good.
