  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Ney Bailey -- I highly recommend this rare and riveting look behind the Iron Curtain. : Can you imagine what it was like to live as a clandestine Christian missionary behind the Iron Curtain where the fear and terror were palatable? You are in for a treat to get a genuine glimpse into what it was like for Debby Thompson. You will see God's love and faithfulness in the midst of it all. Having gone behind the Iron Curtain many times in the 80's to visit missionaries, including Debby and Larry Thompson and their 3 wonderful children, I know every word Debby wrote is true. For me, reading her words was nostalgic. It was riveting and I couldn't put it down. It brought tears, joy, and awe seeing God's faithfulness, provision, and grace every step of the way. I highly recommend this rare look as Debby takes us behind the Iron Curtain. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 27, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Candice Holtz -- You don’t want to miss the story God was writing while the world was reading another. : I preordered Pulling Back the Iron Curtain, Stories from a Cold War Missionary, and thank you Amazon, it arrived on the day of its release. I couldn’t put it down and read the whole book in one day!! Debby, a wife and mother, followed God’s call to take the Good News of Jesus to Communist Poland. This book is as much history as it is His story. Her 40 vignettes made me laugh and cry, hold my breath and give a deep sigh, stand in awe and praise my Lord and Savior. “While the world was reading one story, God was writing another” is absolutely true. You don’t want to miss God’s story. I’m going to order several copies for family and friends. Candice Holtz ( Reviewed in the United States on October 14, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Carol Jones -- Obedience in the midst of hardship : Wow! What a journey!! Every couple of chapters I would stop and say to my husband, “Oh my! Listen to this!” And I would read the passage or chapter to him. This book has blessed and encouraged me. I cried through most of it as I saw over and over God’s faithfulness to the Thompson’s obedience. And the chapter “A Mighty Fortress” left me awed and amazed at the full circle of Larry’s obedience and response to God’s vision. Thank you, Debby, for sharing your “hidden” years. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- Debby 's stories from Poland are inspiring! : Thank you Debby for sharing some of your life and lessons learned from Poland. I was so encouraged as a wife, mother and follower of Jesus by your book. Each chapter was a story of God working. I cried and laughed reading the different stories. I read the book in one afternoon wish it was long with more stories as I was amazed at each one. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 13, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from LAS -- Treasures in secret places : I couldn’t wait to start diving into this new book - hearing first hand how someone survived in dark, evil-controlled nation all the while carrying out the great commission - “go make disciples of all nations”. The rock solid, Godly principles that are discovered in this book are a treasure trove. As in Isaiah 45:3, Debby shares all the riches she and Larry found in the secret places and in doing so they are a testimony of the Lord Jesus Christ! Thank you Debby for all the gems in this new book! ( Reviewed in the United States on October 20, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kay -- God is Faithful : I found this book to contain chapter after chapter of God’s Faithfulness to the Thompson family. As they sought to honor Him by moving to Communist Poland, He provided just what they needed. I would highly recommend this book!! ( Reviewed in the United States on November 1, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from J Glenchur -- Captivating and Inspirational! : Pulling Back the Iron Curtain, by Debby Thompson, is an inspiring potpourri of stories from her and her husband’s thirty plus years as missionaries in Eastern Europe; many are gripping with suspense, others are tender, and all are captivating and scented with the fragrance of the Lord and the miraculous touch of God. Many chapters read like a spy novel. At times I could only go through one or two before laying the book down with tears in my eyes. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 12, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Read Books -- Moving and authentic : With vignettes of her life in communist Poland, Debby Thompson pulls back the curtain on Communism as it was experienced by this American missionary and her family. In a time when many downplay or are not taught about Communist repression, Debby reminds us of the intimidation with which the National Security Police “instilled fear in the life of the Polish population;” the dreariness and deprivation of socialized medicine as exemplified when the Thompsons learned there were “no liquid antibiotics in the entire country” for their ailing daughter; the lines and shortages and dreadful quality of food; the strict government control of media that left Debby straining “for the faintest evidence of a verbal lifeline to my familiar world far away” … and of course, the religious persecution, which meant that missionary work had to be done in secret, with all the risks and challenges that entailed.
