While the book understandably has a decidedly Christian slant, it should resonate with any person who has faith, is seeking faith, has abandoned faith, or has the slightest bit of compassion for our planet and its inhabitants. I don't feel preached to or yelled at, just reminded of the good in life. I give his books as gifts and the recipients immediately understand why I sing his praises. As he does in all of his writings, with this book, John hits the nail on the head when it comes to living an authentic life, being true to our spirituality and treating others with kindness, tolerance and dignity. He teaches us real, human lessons and does it in such a way that is beautiful and moving and inspiring. Anything John Pavlovitz writes is a MUST-READ. While the journey through these spaces is deeply personal, it is also universal in its hope of harmony with the world and the forces that shape and confront us. John Pavolitz has written a deeply thoughtful book to guide the journey for which I am deeply appreciative. I read it straight through and am pleased to recommend it to fellow travelers. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Andy -- A breath of fresh air for “post Evangelicals” : I had not heard of John Pavlovitz until a recommendation for this book from Shane Claiborne popped up on a social media feed. I was intrigued by the title and ordered on impulse. This is a book that will speak deeply into the situation faced by people brought up in the theologically prescriptive world of Evangelical Christianity. It also has a lot to say for people looking to explore the richness of the Christian faith, but who are put off by formulaic approaches to Christianity. In short it cuts through the crap and gets to the central basis of Christian faith - a God of love who calls his followers to love as he does, as exemplified in the person of Jesus. It is written very much for an American audience but as a British reader I found a lot that speaks to the UK context, where although the Christian faith is less overtly politicised it is nevertheless tainted by the ludicrous maxim “love the sinner, hate the sin”. As Pavlovitz states “these six words are responsible for more loveless Christianity than any combination in recorded history”. (Of course in the context of LGBTQ+ people and in many other contexts as well.) In summary this is a thought provoking and refreshing read. The writing style is clear, cogent and pulls no punches. The ability to love others unconditionally. There maybe stuff in it that you can't agree with and yes it is quite American centred but at is heart this book is a great call for us to love....
